Amicable Society

The Shenington Amicable Society was formed in 1841. The Rules published laid down that there should be no more than 121 members; every member should subscribe three shillings each quarter; the annual meeting should be held on Trinity Tuesday, on which day there should be a church service and dinner. The object of the Society was to provide from the subscriptions for a payment of up to seven shillings a week to any sick member (for up to a year).

The annual service, with silver band in attendance, was held on Trinity Monday up to 1987 and attracted a large crowd. The members, with visiting Oddfellows and clergy, marched around the Green behind the Societys banner which is now kept in the church. In 1971, Sir John Betjeman, later Poet Laureate, spoke at the service on the character of the countryside and the buildings in the village.
